When it comes to a dinner with friends you want to serve a wine with real appeal, Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc is just such a wine.
You've probably tasted many wines of this grape but I've found none that are quite as friendly, approachable, and appealing as those from South Africa.
The Wine: Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc 2012
The Food: Recipes by Miles Thompson, SHED Restaurant, Healdsburg, California
The Place: Our new home in Garrison NY with friends from nearby Cold Spring
Founded in 1989, Mulderbosch Vineyards is widely know as one of South Africa’s top producers. Embracing sustainable farming and minimally intrusive wine making techniques their wines have always had a rich homage to the terroir from where they come.
The wines are consistently award winning. The Sauvignon Blanc has always been a favorite of ours, pairing well with simple starters like these locally produced French style cheeses, olives and crackers.
As well as these two dishes we made for dinenr taken from a recent Bon Appetite article on the fabulous SHED restaurant, market and learning center in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, California.
We a made localized version of Miles Chicory and Asian Pear Salad with Membrillo Vinaigrette
And a version of Delicata Squash Carbonara
Yes there are a lot of Sonoma wines that would have been a perfect match for these dishes but the Mulderbosch was exceptional.
Wine guide author John Platter famously referred to the Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc as ”South Africa’s most celebrated Sauvignon.”
Mulderbosch Vineyards has always been an innovator in sustainable wine growing and making practices. Four years ago the Vineyard was acquired by the by California-based investment company Terroir Capital with well known wine investor Charles Banks giving the wine makers more resources to continue this quest. We look forward to many decades of great wines.
