Many a vista in Sicily spans grape vines for as wide as the eye can see. Wonderful wines are made there like this delightful Nerello Mascalese that we discovered at Donato Yannitelli’s astute wine and spirits shop in the the neighborly village of Cold Spring, NY.
The Wine: Branciforti Nerello Mascalese of Feudi Bordonaro
The Food: Goodness from the Cold Spring Farmers Market
The Places: Between Mount Erice and the Egadi islands, Sicily, Cold Spring, NY and Home.
The wine has a beautifully balanced construct of bright fruit flavors with enticing earthy herbaceous undertones that remind me of some of my favorite wines of southern France.
The vineyards of Feudi Bordonaro lie in an incredibly fertile area in northern Sicily between Mount Erice and the Egadi islands. The wine makers there are intently committed to producing wines true to the region.
We paired the wine with farm fresh delights we found at the Cold Spring Farmers Market at Boscobel. Like amazing ground lamb from Full Moon Farm that made lamb meatballs with rosemary tomato sauce that we accompanied with fall harvest vegetables to make mashed turnips with crispy shallots and oven roasted leaks. A beautiful pairing all around.
Cold Spring is a wonderful village on the Hudson between Peekskill and Beacon, it is easily accessed via car, train or even boat. Here you fill find beautiful scenery, great hiking, wonderful restaurants and shopping. And a very good wine store.
Donato Yannitelli's wine and spirits shop is slightly out of town on the way to Garrison. It offers a very well considered selection of wines at appropriate pricing. We found three wines to buy, could have chosen many more.
