When I spotted this wine at Astor Wines in New York, I had to buy it, loved the label and the magical images it aroused in my mind. A wonderful wine made by 5th Generation wine makers who bring the best of the modern to decades old traditions including “music therapy in the cellar.”
The Wine: Fatalone® Teres Puglia Primitivo
The Food: Pancetta, Arugula, Tomato Pasta with fresh herbs, my own recipe
The Place: Home, with Sweet Memories of a Trip to Puglia
We love Primitivo in all its renditions, rich and dark to bright and fruity. This Primitivo was a new experience, made in a very natural, nonintrusive, style. It has a surprising bright rose color, and the flavors are delicate and exquisite.
It paired beautifully with a pasta dish of pancetta and fresh garden greens, herbs and tomatoes over Farfalle. A heavier red may have overwhelmed this plate. This wine was made for the summer season … “Our ancestors produced this wine because they wanted to have a wine, structured like a Primitivo red wine, which could be enjoyed at cooler temperatures during the Summer.” Fatalone
Fatalone has been producing wine since the 19th century when Petrera Nicola founded the vineyard. Natural wine growing and production has always been embraced and decades later his progeny use 100% organic and sustainable practices. This wine drinks and feels healthy.
The name of the vineyard “originated with Filippo Petrera (2nd generation), Nicola’s son, who was, in his time, nicknamed Il Fatalone. It quickly caught on becoming the family nickname. Fatalone translates literally into "Lady Killer". "Filippo Petrera lived until the age of 98 ... having breakfast every morning till his last day with half a litre of Primitivo and half a litre of fresh milk. “ Sounds like a wonderful diet to me.
Lastely lets not forget about the music. So important to the Puglian culture and evidently to great wine making as well.
"We look at vines and wines like people and give them all the best we could desire for ourselves. We give them care through our daily attention and loving presence on the vineyards in respect of the utmost artisanal winemaking traditions. We provide a fresh and comfortable environment through the soundproofing of the premises and temperature control; tranquillity and harmony by applying music therapy in the cellar, a mix of classical music and sounds from nature to support the micro oxygenation and the activity of the living micro flora present in our natural wines. This mix is the key to our success." Winemakers
Primitivo is a very worthy wine to explore. It is not always easy to find, but worth the effort. We have many articles on this wonderful grape here: Manoavino Loves Primitivo
