Poor Henry’s Pub in Montville near Boonton has been a landmark for classic American dining and a great local pub for decades. My daughter Nell tipped me off that it also now one of the best places in New Jersey for craft beers. We decided to give Poor Henry’s a try.
The Wine: Nope, the drink of choice here is fine craft beer, although the fine Verhaeghe Duchesse De Bourgogne a reddish-brown ale from the West-Flanders region of Belgium also known as “The Burgundies of Belgium” was as good as any wine.
The Food: Great Bar food, wings, burgers and more
The Place: Poor Henry’s Pub, Montville NJ a blast from the past with an eye to the future. The kind of great pub every town should have.
Poor Henry’s is the real thing, take this cash register, not an antique object of décor, but a working part of the bar still in service after 40 years. There are TVs of course but placed in corners or off to the side so they are not too intrusive.
A bar and restaurant like the ones my parents enjoyed, classic places without pretense just very good food and drink and a comfortable vibe. The staff here is very friendly and conversant.
We started with a couple of excellent beers from the rotating 23 taps. The selection is nicely diversified. And if you ask Jesse he will make you his special cocktail of three beers. With this, the long list of bottles and the creative cocktail list, you are bound to find something you really like.
The food menu is complete with nice selections from land and sea. We started with this very fresh dish of broccoli and garlic. Tasted crisp and fresh like it just came from the farm.
Also enjoyed the chicken wings which were meaty and well cooked. There is a choice of four different sauces. This is the Asian influenced honey soy.
A rare site at Poor Henry’s but a good shot of the comfortable bar. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, but as we drank and dined the place started to fill up with the diverse regulars, from just drinking age to seniors who probably have been coming here for years.
Poor Henry’s is know for their Prime Rib, Steaks and BBQ Ribs, but we went for one of their interesting burgers. This one is the Porter Burger, with Porter Cheddar Cheese made with Guinness Porter. The meat and cheese was delicious, but a little overdone, I'll order it rare next time, the roll and fries very tasty.
After tasting samples of a few more beers we settled on two more excellent brews. All in all a very fine time. We will be back.

Great write up! I've known Jesse for a long time and he's always been an extremely talented chef and drink master! I ate at poor Henry's as a kid and now I bring my children there and will continue to do so!
