They say that Prosecco was created for afternoon drinking, though in the US it is consumed much later than that. As its popularity has grown here, so has the quality of production in Italy. This Processco made this meal perfect.
The Wine: Montelvini, Venegazzu, Asolo Prosecco Superiore Millesimato $$
The Food: A lovely brunch with friends, soup, salad, sandwich; simple, yet crafted to perfection
The Place: Home of Anne and Will, overlooking the falls, at The Mill, Little Falls.
The wine complemented each dish from soup to dessert so perfectly.
While Prosecco was named after the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape, Glera, may have originated, DOC Prosecco is produced across Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, traditionally in D.O.C.G of Conegliano Valdobbiadene, but also in DOCG Montello e Colli Asolani near Nervesa, next to the river Piave, and near the beautiful Rocca di Asolo.
With these images dancing in our mind we began our meal with a delicate cream of cauliflower with chives and truffle oil.
Asolo Prosecco is “Millesimato” meaning single vintage, which means greater care and perfection must be applied in making the wine resulting in a finer wine than those of juice from multiple vintages.
This was surely proven with our second course of frisee salad with a light vinaigrette and slab panceta along with grill toasted sandwiches with asiago cheese and fresh tomato.
As we brunched, I shared the story of this wine and the Serena family who have been involved in the wine business in Trevisio, Veneto since 1881. Today Armando Serena works with his son Alberto and daughter Sarah to produce and market the finest wines.
They are particularly excited, with good reason, about this wine , Asolo Prosecco, as it is a wonderful reflection of the beauty and agricultural richness of this part of Treviso.
The wine has beautiful effervescence and balance with seductive flavors of apricot, pear, and a touch of citrus.
It also went well with our dessert of home made ice creams and Italian cookies.
In addition to Asolo Prosecco Montelvini Venegazzu produces other sparkling and still wines including their “Farms” – “Aziende Agricole” line which are “unique and inimitable wines made with respect towards ecology and tradition” in the DOCG Montello e Colli Asolani area More. We would love to experience these wines.
