When I think of where I’d like to be on Christmas, besides home, one place that comes to mind is the beautiful Finger Lakes. Such a festive place during the holidays.
The Wine: Ravines Dry Riesling Finger Lakes $$
The Food: Roasted Chicken, with Rosemary, Garlic and Lemon, and Carrots, Parsnips, Onions, Turnips and Potatoes.
The Place: Home Sweet Home, where else on Christmas Eve.
Skaneateles Lake "The Roof Garden of the Lakes"
For dinner Diana roasted a Goffle Road Poultry Farm chicken, the best and freshest you can find around here. With a beautiful variety of fall root vegetables from our own Montclair Farmers Market.
The rich, woody, roasted flavors were a perfect palate for this crisp Dry Riesling from a boutique winery founded by Morten & Lisa Hallgren called Ravines.
It has beautiful green apple flavors with pear and some citrus notes. I found that it started very tart but as it opened became more fruitful and balanced. In fact I had the remainder of the bottle the next morning and it was delicious. Hey, I’m allowed to have a morning toast on Christmas Day.
I met Lisa at a Winebow wine event a few years ago and fell in love with their wines. I was excited to see it a local wine shop, Magnolias in Upper Montclair.
The Finger Lakes have become a very exciting wine area with great places to dine and vacation. Especially with people like Morten Hallgren who was raised in the Provence, France where his family owned and operated Domaine de Castel Roubine and brings generations of wine making expertise to the region.
As a destination Ravines is a great place to taste wine, but there is also the Ravinous Kitchen that serves small dishes of local fare to compliment the wine.
