Malbec is such a versatile grape, happily reflecting the diverse terroirs where it is grown. It is a wine of many personalities and pairs well with many foods. Then a Malbec like this comes along that expands the wine’s dimensions. It paired very nicely with the inspired Middle Eastern recipes we made this night.
The Wine: Curioso, Sparkling Rose of Malbec, Mendoza Argentina
The Food: Roasted Chicken with Carrots and Turnips, Freekeh with Mushrooms, Salad of Greens, Dates, and Cheese.
The Places: Home,Mendoza Argentina, the Middle East
You’re probably curious about what Freekeh is. A Middle Eastern food made from wheat, it is described recently by best-selling author and nationally-recognized health expert Frances Largeman-Roth in the Huffington Post as the next super grain. Our friends Steven and Gail turned us on to this great food. Steve got his in Istanbul but we found ours at the Paterson Farmers Market an abundant source of local and international delicacies. The chicken was from Goffle Road Poultry Farm which by the way has the best tasting chicken in the world.
Diana created the meal from recipes and ideas in the cookbooks of Yotam Ottolenghi & Sami Tamimi.
The wine has bright effervescent fruity flavors that piqued the rich and delicate flavors of the dinner in a very good way. The softness of a rose in a usually deep wine like Malbec worked well.
This wine is a bit of a mystery, as there is no discernable indication of who makes this wine on the bottle , just says “Produced and Bottled by C-80551-EXP B-87984.” Very curioso!
If you know C-80551 tell them we like the wine. They also make a conventional Malbec and a Cabernet Sauvignon. All are imported by Charm Imports a subsidiary or division of Vine Connections and importer who has a great reputation when it comes to South American wines. We found it at Gary’s Wines in Wayne.
