Here is a winter cocktail that I had at a recent holiday party made with Apple Cider and Averna Amaro the Italian liqueur of Caltanissetta, Sicily.
Amaro (Italian for "bitter") liqueurs have a bitter-sweet flavor, sometimes syrupy, and an alcohol content between 16% and 35%.
This one is named after its inventor, Salvatore Averna, who invented the recipe in 1868. It has an alcohol content of about 29%.
I found this warm cocktail on talldrinks.com. Here is the recipe which I increased for a larger party.
Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo
In a large pot gently warm a quart of apple cider, pick something fresh from a local farmer. When warm add 8 ounces of Averna and 16 ounces of bourbon or rye whiskey, I used Rittenhouse. To lower the alchohol level use less whiskey and add more cider. Stir gently and then add 3 ounces of honey. Taste and add honey, cider or Averna to taste.
Throw in 3 or 4 cinnamon sticks and let it all steep for a while on low heat. Should be nicely warm not too hot. Server in a martini glass or small mugs.
Garnish with a cinnamon stick, apple wedge or orange slice.
