An exquisite wine from a family-owned wine estate in South Italy’s Campania. It is of 80% Aglianico and 20% percent Piedirosso, two ancient grapes that find amazing life in this region, Terra di Lavoro. Produced in the Italian way, create wines as nature intended. It was presented by Robert Barry of Winebow at Upstairs tonight.
Truely great wines a come from another approach. Italian wine makers are the best at this, I think. The place that coined the phrase "il dolce far niente," the sweetness of doing nothing, has a very intent way to letting nature take it's course.
This is very evident in this wine from Terra di Lavoro, the name of a historical region of southern Italy. It corresponds roughy to the modern southern Lazio and northern Campania. In Italian the name means literally "Land of Work".
From here comes Galardi Terra di Lavoro Roccamonfina.
"The wine is deep purple in color with smoky, earthy aromas and seductive hints of tobacco and graphite. Notes of ripe black cherries, cassis, tobacco and leather come through on the palate of this big-structured, full-bodied wine." Winebow
The people at Winebow who import this wine follow their founder's, Leonardo LoCascio, passion for bringing great small production Italina wines to us in America. This is a great example.
The Galardi estate, in beautiful Campania, was founded in 1991 and now is run four cousins Maria Luisa Murena, Arturo and Dora Celentano, and Francesco Catello. It is unique in that it is devoted to making just this one wine. They assure quality through their distinguished oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella.
