Fond memories of a week in Tuscany came forth with just a sip of this superb wine from the beautiful Chianti region, made near the charming little town of Gaiole in Chianti. I picked it out for a rare Sunday dinner of the entire family as both our kids were home for a few days. It is called Stielle Toscana from the farm of Rocca Di Castagnoli.
Diana was working the NY Gift Show, so I was free in the kitchen to create a fabulous feast.
And a feast it was, a very fresh lamb ragu over pappardelle with baby zucchini marinated in garlic and oil. I wish I could point you to a recipe but I used bits from several to make this dinner.
I like taking on the role of Italian mama in the kitchen. But then it came the time to be master of the cellar and pick a wine to suit the meal.
The obvious choice was one that my friend Al, who runs the great internet store for Wine Chateau in Metuchen and Piscataway, recommend to me, Rocca Di Castagnoli Stielle Toscana I.G.T 2005. It is a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak.
Since it does not conform to the strict Italian DOCG standards it is designated I.G.T. (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) meaning it is wine that is typical of the region. And that it is, reminiscent of the many great wines we enjoyed on our last trip to this area.
Wine Advocate gave the wine 94 points, and said "This level of depth and concentration was not at all easy to achieve in 2005. I am quite taken with the wine’s soft, utterly engaging personality. The round, generous finish leaves a lasting impression for its polish, detail and purity."
I loved the way the wine seduced and danced with my dishes with grace and intencity. Always present but never over powering.
You would love the wine.
