Met friends for another fabulous dinner at Chef Jon's in Whippany. Love that place. We had Peking Duck this time and while not quite as good as some of the places in Chinatown, NYC it was still right up there. The other dishes we had were the smoked fish appetizer, scallion pancakes, rice cakes with pork this time and stir-fried eggplant in a rich brown garlic sauce. All delicious.
My friend Marc and I usually talk before going out to strategize our wine for dinner. This time we didn't. To our surprise and satisfaction we both brought Vouvray which when made to be semi-dry is just perfect with Asian cuisine.
The first wine we tasted was Domaine de Vaufuget Vouvray 2010 which sells for around $12. Diana picked this up at Magnolias.
"Straw color with white fruit aromas enhanced by subtle notes of wildflowers. Luscious and full on the palate, forward mixed-fruit flavors of ripe peaches, green figs, even a hint of banana; there's a distinct impression of sweetness." Winemaker
This was a little syrupy with intense flavors, lots of green apple and tropical fruit.
The second wine Grandes Caves Saint Roch Vouvray 2010 which sells for around $14 Marc bought at 56 Degrees.
"Light floral characteristics with a slight sweetness. The aromas of honey and apple perfume the glass. This Vouvray has body and finesse that is sure to please."
It was more subtle, airy, than the first. I tasted a lot of Pineapple. Both were quite good.
