Their are legends that claim there was a Hungarian peasant named Malbec who brought the grape from his home country to France. But Pierre Galet a French ampelographer and viticulturalist, damn those scientists, points out that the evidence suggests Côt was the variety's original name and that it probably originated in northern Burgundy. Despite a similar name, the grape Malbec Argentinais not Malbec, but rather a variety of the southwestern French grape Abouriou.
In any case Malbec by any source or name has flourished in Argentina where it is made into a wine of its own. I have been drinking and extolling the joys of Malbec for years. But it has just been in the last couple of years that Malbec has really taken off. Malbec Beckons -- Heed the Call - Wall Street Journal.
"Malbec is a medium to full-bodied red wine, depending on how it is made. It has ripe fruit flavors of plums and blackberry that can give often give it a jammy nature. Again depending on who is making the wine. Some are playful others are more refined. The tannins are usually tight, which most people like, and it has an underlying earthy, woody flavors that can give it a rustic feel.
It is a very versatile wine that pairs well with many foods spicy Mexican, Cajun, Indian, southern Italian, and any grilled meat, burgers, steaks or sausages. It is a great summer barbecue wine.
