I have always been a big fan of the delicious and entertaining wines of Alex and Alison Sokol Blosser.
This beautiful red is new to me and has gotten me loving their wines in an even larger way.
Named after the Roman Goddess of wine and health, Meditrina, it is enchanting and empowering. Made of elegant Syrah, exciting Zinfandel and swelling Pinot Noir it has a core of rich, lush berry, intriguing spice, tannin and structure as well as flowers, earth and elegance. This all comes together in luscious, juicy, easy-drinking red wine.
I would have loved to see the looks on Alex and Alison's faces when they finished creating this wine, their smile of delight must have been amazing as they knew this is it.
Alex and Alison's parents, Bill Blosser and Susan Sokol Blosser were true and brave pioneers when they planted their first vines in 1971. Unbelievable as it may seem there was no wine industry in Oregon back then. Now we take Oregon wine completely for granted. There are over 400 wineries and more than 19,000 acres of vineyards, Oregon wines are available throughout the world.
I have always loved their "Evolution" which is now in its 14th edition.
They say, "In 2004, we discovered a little known Roman goddess, Meditrina. Everyone knows about Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and intoxication. Who knew there was also Meditrina, Roman goddess of wine and health! We couldn't believe that thousands of years ago the Romans had enough savvy to name a goddess of wine and health. What happened? Overshadowed for too long by Bacchus's flamboyance, Meditrina deserves to take her rightful place in the wine world. We decided to help her get there by creating a red wine in her honor."
A beautiful story and it gives one pause and think to honor this wine in an appropriate way. Image by Emily Balivet
We tasted the Meditrina a few nights ago and beyond its beautiful personality. It loves to be poured into just the right glass.
We tried it in a standard garden variety wine glass, we tried it through an aerator, we tried it in a fine Bordeaux glass. None were satisfying. But in a Burgundy glass like the ones below this wine emerged like the bright morning sun. The aromas and flavors filled our senses in abundance.
You can find the right glass here:
This information is priceless. How can I find out more?

Riedel also makes a Pinot Noir glass specifically for Oregon Pinot Noirs. Meditrina is best drank from one of these, as are all Pinot Noirs from Oregon.
