McLaren Vale is one of my very favorite wine regions. I have a dream to live there some day. They say it is where the "Vine meets the Sea" and locals say “It's a secret you don't want anyone to know about sometimes...” or “It's a culmination of eccentric people who love to play, and love to get the most out of life...” My kind of place for sure.
D’Arenberg is one of the most significant wineries in McLaren Vale. Their slogan or mission, The Art of Being Different, is surely realized in this wine, The Stump Jump Red a Grenache, Shiraz & Mourvedre blend. A wine of the Rhone Valley with that wonderful Aussie flair.
Wine Spectator applauded this wine with 90 points, a Best Value designation and one the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2009: "Ripe and open-textured, this is impressive for the way it packs in the cherry, blackberry and raspberry flavors and doesn't take the foot off the gas pedal until the mineral-inflected finish has played through. Drink now through 2018. 5,000 cases imported." (09/09)
"The Stump Jumps are a ‘pigeon pair’, and the Stump Jump white’s sibling is a good example of the result of blending the two backbone varieties of McLaren Vale, Grenache and Shiraz.
Both Grenache and Shiraz once called the Rhône Valley home, but after over a hundred years in McLaren Vale, they are pretty well settled here!
Once picked, the fruit is gently crushed in our ‘Demoisy’ open mouthed, rubber toothed crusher and pumped into submerged cap open fermenters. Following fermentation, The Stump Jump Grenache Shiraz is gently pressed by our 19th Century “Coq” and “Bromley & Tregoning” basket presses prior to oak maturation.
This is a rich, soft and flavoursome red in the traditional McLaren Vale style. Mulberry and plum flavours from the Grenache combine with the blackberry, spice and white pepper of the Shiraz. Best served at room temperature, this wine will gain added complexity with careful cellaring over the next 2 – 5 years." Winemaker
