We were out in Brooklyn to visit a friend who recently moved to a charming little house in the still up and coming Fort Green/Clinton Hill neighborhood.
On the way we stopped at the amazing food market on Atlantic Avenue, Sahadi Fine Foods, post on this to follow, and then had dinner at a perfect Latin restaurant called Luz on Vanderbilt Avenue a short way from Pratt Institute.
These neighborhoods have changed a lot since I lived in Brooklyn in the early 70's and then the late 80's. There is so much to explore and enjoy in the Atlantic Avenue and Fort Green/Clinton areas.
Dinner started with an absolutely perfect Pisco Sour...
Luz is the loving creation of Pedro Munoz and Vivian Torres, former Pratt architecture students and neighborhood residents who saw a great opportunity to bring the wonderful cuisine of South America to NY.
Luz, pronounced “loose,” means “light” in Spanish, Pedro and Vivian certainly accomplished this feeling with cordial staff and a comfy environment with a "hip minimalist ambience inside that offers hints of Buenos Aires circa 1990". Jason Hernandez-Rosenblatt, Daily News - Learning Latin
The menu offers tastes of Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba and Argentinia. We sampled the Arepa De Queso, Dos Empenadas and Piquillos from the Antojitos menu (An antojito is a Mexican snack designed to satisfy a craving) . They certainly satisfied and delighted the palate, but in truth just induced greater cravings for this wonderful Latin cuisine.
For dinner we shared the perfectly done grilled lamb chops with lucious dark rum and sugar cane glaze, served over a mouth watering goat cheese malagna mash and with piquant lamb picadillo rolls. I can still taste the flavors of this wonderful dish.
I am told the Peruvian style rotisserie chicken is to die for.
"Luz, even when it pushes its boundaries, rarely oversteps them. Their menu darts among Latin American cuisines and between old-school staples and nuevo Latino"
Peter Meehan NY Times Latin America, Classico and Nuevo "The bar is never empty...a couple of classics, a few clever new drinks, all at agreeable prices...always draw a crowd."
The wine list looked very good but we stayed with the wonderful cocktails.
