I Matt at a fabulous wine tasting featuring some of the great wines of Jacob's Creek held at his NY restaurant.
He is a affable yet focused and hard working guy that runs a great bar and restaurant. It is a few blocks from my new office and I have been looking for an opportunity to stop in. Since vacationing in Australia a few years ago, I love everything Australian, especially Australian / Mod Oz cuisine. I have been to Eight Mile Creek and the Tuck Shop in NY. The Australian has been on my list for some time. Passing by it seemed more like a sports pub, I was happy to learn that it is a great restaurant as well.

The vibe welcomes you for a break from a day of (Speaking Aussie) "Hard yakka" ... hard work - to "Bludge" ... to laze around, avoid responsibilities - and "Shout" ... to buy a round of drinks at a pub for your "Cobbers" ... a friend or mate
During the wine tasting we got a very nice sampling of the Australian's cuisine. I enjoyed the sampling so much that I can't stop thinking about when I will be back for more. Very soon.
What is Australian food?
My answer is this:
It is an amazing combination of international flavors, where distinct tastes prevail, it is like fusion with out being fused. It is built on traditional flavors of Aboriginal and British influence overlaid and integrated with an array of Asian and European flavors. We love cooking Australian at home.
Matt's web site explains it further:
"At The Australian we are often asked, “What is Australian food?” It’s a good question.
"Traditionally Australian food has been influenced by two main groups – the British, who settled the country in the late eighteenth century, and the Aboriginals who occupied the land for more than 40,000 years before then...."
"Over the past 40 years there has been a major shift in Australian cuisine. The food, like the society itself, has taken on a much more multi-cultural influence, especially with the arrival of immigrants from the Mediterranean and more recently South East Asia."
If you are new to this try the Aussie Tasting Plate for two Smoked salmon stack, sticky prawns, shrimp sate, chicken sate, snapper & crab meat cigars and an Aussie Meat Pie Beef or Curry Beef with egg or Aussie Sausage Rolls of pork, veal & beef.
There is a great selection of Australian beers and wines.
