Wine of Chardonnay grape is now produced all over the world, and in many places to tremendous result, but I still contend that the very best are those from Chardonnay's essential birth place, Burgundy France.
This is a fine example of what a great Chardonnay should be gentle yet complete citrus pear apple flavors, with wonderful minerality and a big splash of vanilla cream at the end.
2004 Domaine Ferret "Les Vernays" Pouilly-Fuissé
An excellent choice from Amanti Vino's wine club.
Burgundy is made up of many notable appelations they include:
Côte de Nuits :
Côte de Nuits - Gevrey Chambertin - Clos Vougeot - Vosne Romanée - Nuits Saint
Georges
Côte de Beaune :
Côte de Beaune - Corton - Pommard - Volnay - Meursault - Chassagne Montrachet
Côte Châlonnaise and Mâcon :
Givry - Pouilly Fuissé - Rully - Macon - Mercurey
All Burgundy region :
Bourgogne aoc - Bourgogne Aligoté
Pouilly Fuissé has always been a favorite although Chablis, Meursault, and Chassagne Montrachet are strong in my heart as well.
This wine is from Domaine Ferret in Pouilly-Fuissé, now a Louis Jadot vineyard. Notice the age, how often do you drink a white wine that is 5 years old. This is a testimate to it's quality.
In 2008, Maison Louis Jadot bought this magnificent 15-hectare domaine. The Ferret family, the former owner played an important part in creating the renown of the Pouilly Fuissé appellation.
For this wine the harvest is done entirely by hand. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations are done in barrel with extensive lees contact being fundamental to the "elevage".
Between 25% and 50% of the wines are aged in new oak, the "Les Vernays" normally sees 15 months of aging prior to bottling and the remaining "crus".
2004 is a good vintage. A very lively vintage for the subtle and delicate whites.
