My focus on Southern Hemisphere wines continues to pay off.
Here is a jubilent Mendoza Malbec that I really enjoyed called "Pileta 39" (Pileta means "Bin" in Spanish).
Had this wine with a great Father's day lunch of Beef-and-Lamb Burgers with Cheddar and Caper Remoulade, Food and Wine Magazine June Issue Recipe.
The robust but not overpowering flavors melded well with the complex flavors of the burger. The wine had nice multi-dimensional fruit, black cherry, plum and blackberry with a slight touch of smoke spice and a walnut flavor at the back end. Easy tannins imparted a nice feeling on the tongue.
The next day I finished the bottle with take-out Chinese food and it worked well with those flavors as well.
Grapes for this wine are sourced by the famous wine-maker Altos and it is brought to the US by renowned Michael Skurnik Wines.
"Typical of Malbec wines from Argentina, this inky purple, full-bodied red features rich tannins, peppery, spicy flavors on the finish, and ripe plummy, blackberry, and brambly fruit. Hailing from the Uco Valley, one of the best, cool-climate areas in the Mendoza Region, the wine is elegant yet powerful." Importer
Available from Home Liquors in Verona for $7.00, elsewhere between $7 and $10.
