Village Gourmet is a local institution in Rutherford, originally opened in 1990. It has been so popular that the few times I have tried to go there for lunch during the week the wait has been to long. 
Was in Lyndhurst visiting Winepro on Saturday and decided to give the Village Gourmet another try.
At 11:45 we were the first to be seated, by the time we finished lunch the restaurant was filling up.
We had a very nice lunch. As soon as your are seated and drinks are ordered a complimentary plate of hot green peppers in a light soy sauce marinade and a nice mixed salad are brought to the table, very nice touch.
For lunch we started with a special of the day, General Tso Shrimp and Scallops with Japanese Pears in a Sweet and Sour Sauce. This dish was delicious the breading was light and fluffy. Not the hard crust you find on most General Tso dishes. Apparently VG's General Tso's Chicken is famous, in Rutherford, I can understand why. We also had the Spicy Beef Tips, sirloin in a special house sauce, which were tender, tasty and just the right amount of spice. Asian is a predominant theme in the menu. But you can also get a delicious thin crust pizza, hamburgers - ordered by the ounce - as well as salads and sandwiches. They also have very good vegetarian selections.
I went off my diet and had a thin crust pizza with fresh basil, mozzarella and sausage. The crust is really thin and the pie was delicious. My daughter, Nell, had a vegetarian stir fry that was also very good. Their menu is here, Village Gourmet Menu.
No wine at this meal, too early in the day, had work to do. But you can enjoy a bottle from the little wine store that is inside Village Gourmet. Has something to do with Rutherford's liquor laws. I noticed some good selections.
Village Gourmet is part of Robert Wong's, Owner and Executive Chef, Village Restaurant Group which also includes the steak place Mignon, pan asian Tina Louise, and Tao's Wok & Restaurant.

Things to do, places to see, with food and booze
It would really be helpful if this web site posted the hours of service, a simple but important bit of information.
