Had the good fortune to enjoy another wonderful family vacation on the Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Last year we stayed in Playa Del Carmen, a great, but very popular location.
This trip we stayed in the quieter village of Akumal about 30 KM south. From there we visited Playa, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Valladolid, Sian Kaan and Xel-ha.
Enjoyed great food and wine, beach, sun, history and nature.
This year our annual trip to Mexico started in Akumal. We rented a condo their through Loco Gringo.
Akumal is a charming village and residential area with some hotels and resorts. Not as crowded and high paced as Playa Del Carmen and not as rustic as Tulum.

We had a few dinners at home but also dined out many nights. Some our favorites include these great restaurant choices in the area:
Romantic beach front bistro serving Mexican and Mayan delicacies. Excellent wine list.
La Lunita is open for dinner offering indoor or beach seating with tables on the sand or their wooden deck on the beach. It is a great place to dine under the moonlight, quite romantic! La Lunita specializes in classic Mexican cuisine and seafood.
A menu to tickle everyone's taste buds. This beach bar and restaurant offers a gorgeous view of Half Moon Bay. The "Swing Bar" has a sand floor and is a popular spot for happy hour. On the beach there are tables and chairs under shade palapas. Upstairs, panoramic windows create a wonderful tropical ambiance with a degree of elegance.
Located in the heart of Akumal, about one hour south of Cancun, where each day at seven in the morning when we open our doors for best breakfast in the Mayan Riviera. Our fresh baked goods, juices and breakfast dishes have made us a favorite gathering spot for the locals as they each begin their day. Now many believe we are the best place to finish their day with such items as the Bleu Cheese Encrusted Filet, Crab Cakes with Roasted Corn Salsa and a 16 item dessert list that is compared to none along the whole coast. If you will be enjoying a special event such as a birthday or anniversary while you are in the area, we offer a wide range of cakes and pastries for just those occasions.
Overlooking the powdery stretches of Tulum beach,Mezzanine’s restaurant features an exciting menu combining classic beach cuisine, the fresh, zingy flavors
of Thailand, and ‘all day’ breakfast delights to leave your taste buds craving more.
Daily fish and seafood specialties, a wonderful array of seasonal salads, freshly baked bread and Italian espresso…

Playa del Carmen, one of Mexico's most popular vacation destinations, is located in the Riviera Maya between Cancun and Tulum. Playa is famous for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and the eclectic mix of people who live here.
You will find Babe's Noodles and Bar in the center of town, just off Playa's famous 5th Avenue. Babe's is a Swedish owned Restaurant and Bar with specialty Thai noodles and a mixed European kitchen. The best mojitos, blueberry daiquiris, margaritas, smoothies and juices. Everything is freshly prepared at the time you order.
Combined with delicious eats, the funky decor featuring lava lamps, pin-up girls and Barbie dolls, as well as personal attention from the owners, this is a dining experience you won't want to miss!
Java Joe's isn't just a coffee shop and lunch emporium; it's a Playa del Carmen institution with an international reputation. Enthusiasts reviews in travel publications such as Fodor's, Travel and Leisure, Expedia and Lonely Planet have guided visitors from around the world to this hot spot, where local divers and divas gather for coffee, croissants and conversation daily from 6:30 am to 11 pm.
Italian cuisine ... great food and atmosphere.
This is a nice dinner on a fun corner in Playa. This is my top restaurant in town. I have enjoyed things such as lamb chops, filet mignon and risotto. We will also be adding more details from their menu soon. Nice spot to "people watch" from your table right on 5th Ave. Best wine selection in Playa.
This Argentine owned restaurant has unique recipes, great service, and is a must try when visiting, or living, in Playa del Carmen. Great wine list
More to follow.
