Dined at Nori, the new Japanese Restaurant in Montclair.
Mixed feelings. The food was very good, decor strange, service irregular.
Over all we had a very nice dinner.
Picked up some juice at Merit Fine Wines an eclectic place where you can find odd things. It is right next door to Nori.
A Jizake Mizunoshirabe Ginjyo Sake that was very nice but will not become a favorite
We also tried something completely new called Old World Temjanika a semi sweet white wine from Macedonia. Very nice with the sushi and the pan-asian flavors of the cooked dishes.
We started with the Wasabi Shrimp (Japanese fried shrimp with spicy wasabi sauce), tasty and delicate, not very spicy and the Seaweed Salad which I found very good.
Then we had two rolls, Krazy: Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, Scallion, Tempura flake and Tuna, Tobiko and the Mango Spider: Soft Shell Crab, Mango & Bangkok Sauce. Diana and Emer thought the rolls were spectacular, I found them to be just good.
Nori offers a very wide selection of rolls lots of interesting combinations. The menu is here.
If you like those boats of sushi and sashimi at Nori you will enjoy the way they serve on a miniature bamboo bridge.
For our entries we tasted the Mustard Prawn (Fried breaded shrimp w. house special Mustard sauce).
The Rolling Steak (Thin sliced steak w. spice, very tender and succulence) The best of these three.
Samble Oelek Basil Chicken : ( Samble oelek is an authentic Malay spice with unique taste, and different from what you have been exposed to.) Our least favorite but still very good.
They have a beautifu Tatami Room for parties of 8 or more tucked away in the back of the restaurant.
