Met friends and family at Bangkok Kitchen a Thai restaurant in Caldwell last night.
The Pad Thai was great. And isn't that the standard by which all Thai restaurants are judged?
The room is pleasant with an amazing reclining Buddha painting.
The rest was mixed.
Enjoyed another delicious Pinot Blanc and a wine you probably have never heard of.

I noticed there are several Argentinean restaurants in Playa Del Carmen.
That started me thinking about another super star wine maker Susan Balbo. I have tasted 3 of her wines and they are exceptional. Her Malbec Rose, Torrentos and her Syrah Bonarda.
The label features a series of three connected and overlapping hands, an image inspired by a Mayan artifact. The artifact illustrates the interconnectedness of every generation, and the irony that we will be both the parent and the offspring at different times in our lives. They also represent Susana and her two children.

Met some friends at Andaman Sea Recipes, a French Thai restaurant in Morristown, for dinner last night. I selected this restaurant because I heard it was originated by the people who did Deja Vu, a favorite of ours in Montclair. I also had fond memories of the old August Moon, a landmark Chinese restaurant that was in the Andaman location. I often dined there as a kid many many years ago.
The wine for the night was French. A wonderful Alsatian Pinot Blanc by Paul Blank and a Bourgogne, Pinot Noir. Both from Amanti Vino in Montclair. Both were excellent.

Italian white wine, Vino Bianco, is my favorite. There are so many varieties. Many people are only familiar with the ubiquitous Pinot Grigio, this is unfortunate because there are so many other Italian white wines to enjoy.
In all fairness, years ago Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio brought attention back to Italian white wines, which were previously shunned because of terrible wines like Bolla Soave.
In an earlier post we discussed Vermentino which is a great summer wine. Excellent with Linguini in white clam sauce, and other garlicy dishes.
Another two favorites are Greco and Roero Arneis, they go well with fall and winter dishes like risotto with winter squash or roasted chicken. Sage and rosemary; robiola cheese are wonderful with these wines.

Dai Kichi the wonderful Japanese restaurant in Upper Montclair is a family favorite. 
I just learned that Dai Kichi means Great Fortune.
We always enjoy their very fresh sushi, sashimi and rolls as well as the well prepared cooked foods.
With Japanese I usually drink Sake. I like it chilled and expensive.
Update November 2009, we've been frequenting Dai Kichi again over the last few months and find it to be very good.

Nell is home from college for her winter break. For her first home cooked meal she asked for Diana’s slow cooked beef brisket in chilli sauce and beer. You can find the recipe below.
I had an open bottle of a favorite Marchesi Di Barola Barbera Monferrato a great value at 9.99 at Shoppers Vineyard and 7.99 at Garys. It was perfect with meat balls the night before, good but not perfect for the brisket. A little too much fruit I think. For brisket in Chilli sauce there's an Chilean Pinot Noir called Leyda available at Amanti Vino that would be fabulous, or a Nero d’Avelo, a great one to try is Firriato "Chiaramonte", available for under $15 at Shopper's Vineyard. Both have rich deep fruit and a smokiness that would work great with the tangy chilli sauce and beer.

Out again with friends, at Employees Only in New York. What a great restaurant with a fantastic well priced wine list.
We tasted a Vouvray and a Pinot Noir, will post the names later.
But, the highlight of the evening was a Hungarian wine that tastes like a Sauvignon Blanc.
