Nerello Mascalese a Wine from Sicily You're Likely to Love

Many a vista in Sicily spans grape vines for as wide as the eye can see. Wonderful wines are made there like this delightful Nerello Mascalese that we discovered at Donato Yannitelli’s astute wine and spirits shop in the the neighborly village of Cold Spring, NY.

Brotherhood, Oldest American Winery, Celebrates 175 Years

Yes Thomas Jefferson may have made wine in America earlier than 1839, but the oldest operating winery, one that has survived Prohibition and many other challenges, is Brotherhood, right here in our own Hudson Valley, New York State.

Afternoon in Paris in NYC, Both a Movie and Meal with Wine

There are endless opportunities in New York to immerse yourself in international arts and cuisines, this past Sunday it was 100% French.

We started off at the Paris Theater on 58th near The Plaza for a showing of “You Will Be My Son” it’s about the travails of a French Vineyard owner and those who try to love him. Then we strolled across town to one of NY’s most authentic French Bistros, Le Bateau Ivre, the Drunken Boat, on 51st for some great wine, food and jazz.

Evening Kayaking on the Hudson Earns a Great Meal at Co. (Company) in Chelsea

Now here is something fun to do, evening kayaking on the Hudson River with Manhattan Kayaking Company. It is an exhilarating experience that works up a good appetite which we amply sated with amazing salads, several pizzas and great beer and wine at Jim Lahey’s perfect Co. (Company) restaurant in Chelsea.

The idea of going on the Hudson River in a tiny boat may sound daunting but believe me it is safe and fabulous fun.

Back to the High Line with Lunch at Terroir at "The Porch"

You know how much we love the High Line, it just keeps getting better and sadly on weekends often very crowded. We like to visit during the week or in the evening when it could not be better, short of more gentle sunny days and balmy dry nights.

One great new addition is Terroir at “The Porch” the latest outpost of the great East Village restaurant, Hearth. This is a sincere extension of their Terroir wine bars. There are now five around town.

Hanging over 10th Avenue with a view of the river and Hudson River Park, it is an outdoor oasis for great beer, food and wine.  We took a day off on Monday and treated ourselves to a great lunch here.
