Springtime calls for sparkling wine and we love all the bubbly that comes from Italy. You no doubt have enjoyed Prosecco, by now it seems like everyone has, and who could forget Asti Spumante, but did you know there are many other sparkling wines from Italy? There are and now is a perfect time to try them.

The lobby bar of the Patria Palace Hotel in Lecce stands like an altar for cocktails and all those exotic Italian Aperitifs. In a land where there may be more altars per capita than any where else we were happy to worship at this one, enjoyed on our recent trip to Italy.
You probably already know an Apéritif or Aperitivo is an herbal alcoholic beverage usually served before a meal to stimulate the appetite. The word comes from the Latin verb aperire, which means “to open.” Worthy of that root, they are colorful and lusciously stimulating and so much to enjoy.
It was still early in the day so we refrained and just sipped some delicious prosecco which is the base of perhaps the most famous Italian cocktail/aperitivo, the Bellini.
Hot summer nights beg for cold fresh sparkling beverages like these we served at a dinner party Friday night. Let me tell you they were largely enjoyed.
All three are from Mionetto who has been producing this type wine for over 120 years and is known as one of Italy's best. They are all in what is called their "IL" line which is very affordable and happily delicious.
We did not make it on the "A" list of the Hampton's this weekend, but I dare say we had just as much fun.
